توفي الأربعاء، عالم الفيزياء البريطاني الشهير، ستيفن هوكينغ، عن 76 عاما، بحسب ما أعلنته عائلته.
وفي بيان نشرته وكالة أنباء "برس أسوسييشن" البريطانية، قال أبناء الراحل الثلاثة وهم لوسي وروبرت وتيم: "نشعر بحزن عميق لأن والدنا الحبيب توفي اليوم (...) لقد كان عالما عظيما ورجلا استثنائيا سيعيش عمله وإرثه لسنوات طويلة". 
وتناول العالم خبر وفاته بشكل واسع، حيث شهد موقع التواصل الاجتماعي على "تويتر"، أكثر من مليون تغريدة عن وفاته.
 
وكان هوكينغ يعاني من التصلب الجانبي الضموري وهو مرض عصبي انتكاسي يصيب الخلايا العصبية الحركية لدى الشخص البالغ، وتتسبب له بالشلل وجعله لا يستطيع التكلم إلا بواسطة جهاز كومبيوتر بصوت اصطناعي تحول إلى سمة مميزة له.
 
ولم تمنع هذه الإعاقة هوكينغ من أن يصبح أحد أعظم العلماء المعاصرين، ويتحدى التوقعات التي لم تكن تمنحه سوى بضع سنوات من الحياة بعد إصابته بالمرض العضال.
 
ولد هوكينغ في أكسفورد في 8 كانون الثاني/ يناير 1942 بعد 300 عام بالتمام والكمال على وفاة العالم الشهير غاليليو.
 
ورثاه مشاهير العالم على مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي، وتناولوا له صورا ومواقف وآراء شهيرة له، وصار اسم "Stephen Hawking" الترند الأعلى عالميا.
